A Plus – Planning for our future


The January issue of A Plus features Johnson Kong, the Institute’s new President, on his three main priorities and plans to connect with more members. Other articles include how members in business should use the Professional Development Framework for PAIBs; Best Corporate Governance Awards 2019 awardees discussing business purpose; and interviews with the Hong Kong Chief Financial Officer of Alès Group Asia, and CPAs who do the volunteer works.

Special arrangements due to coronavirus situation

Due to the evolving coronavirus situation, the Institute's library facilities will be temporarily closed and the services hours of the counter on the 27th floor adjusted to 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. from Monday to Friday, while counter services hours on Saturday remains unchanged (from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon), until further notice. All CPD courses and member events from 3 to 16 Feb are also cancelled.


New webpage on goodwill and impairment

The new webpage on goodwill and impairment provides an update on the Institute's involvement in local and global discussions on accounting for goodwill, as well as upcoming activities.

Explore the Institute’s online CPD courses
While the Institute is holding no face-to-face continuing professional development (CPD) events due to the evolving coronavirus situation, there are over 500 online courses from the Institute and other providers available to enrol in any time, any place. Visit the CPD learning resource centre to explore the courses.

The 6th IR Awards nomination
The Hong Kong Investor Relations Association invites public nominations for its 6th IR Awards by 2 Mar. The awards aim to highlight achievement of individuals and companies with high standards investor relations.

Reminder: CGMA Programme – Special offer to QP-qualified Institute members
Enrol in the Chartered Global Management Accountant (CGMA) Programme offered by the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants from 29 Apr to 1 May at a specially-arranged discounted rate available for members who qualified through the Institute's Qualification Programme (QP). The programme will provide training for the strategic case study exam and serve as a path for the CGMA designation. Join the information session on 13 Feb to learn more about the programme.
Webinar on Exposure Draft General Presentation and Disclosures

The International Accounting Standards Board will hold two 45-minute webinar sessions on 10 Feb (5:00 p.m. HKT and 11:00 p.m. HKT) to provide an overview of the proposals in the Exposure Draft ED/2019/07 General Presentation and Disclosures, which proposes new requirements for presentation and disclosure in financial statements, with a focus on the statement of profit or loss. Register for one of the webinars to learn more and ask questions.

Members can also submit comments on the Exposure Draft to the Institute by 22 May.

Join the sports & recreational interest groups

The Institute has 15 interest groups which organize sports and recreational activities for members. Members can join up to five interest groups free of charge. Login to myCPA to join the interest groups.

Illustrative examples on rent concessions

Due to the recent market conditions, some landlords have chosen to lessen tenants' difficulties by providing rent reduction or other means of subsidy. The Institute has issued a publication to illustrate the application of HKFRS 16 Leases to some commonly seen rent concession arrangements and highlight key factors to be considered for lessees and lessors when accounting for the transaction.
